Birthday Splash

This card was made as a Design Team inspiration card for Try Stampin' on Tuesday Challenge #463 whose optional theme is "splash". This is a perfect summer theme, so come join us!

My Stampin' Up! (SU) "Magical Day" mermaid came immediately to mind because of the the theme. I also love the look of fish scales, so found an inexpensive digital SVG file that I sized appropriately and cut on my ScanNCut digital cutting machine as a window panel.

I hand colored the mermaid and her three seahorse friends after stamping them with black ink, then re-stamping with Versamark and heat setting the clear embossing powder. I like to emboss the outlines of stamps I hand color because it makes the outlines stand out more, and helps keep coloring inside the lines.

The rectangle shapes were cut with stitched dies and layered per the sketch. Underneath, I layered the beautiful specialty bubbles cardstock. The fish scales layer was cut from aqua vellum paper and glued around the sides of the opening.

The sentiment is from the SU "Little Ladybug" stamp set. I created the sentiment panel by first die cutting the shape using the die that had the right length, then selecting a much larger die, I used just one long side of the die to cut off the bottom and top of the original shape to make it long and skinny.

The seahorses were mounted with mini glue dots, and the mermaid was mounted with adhesive foam strips to give even more depth to the card than does the vellum scales panel.

I think one of my grand-daughters will love this card for her birthday. I am rating the difficulty level of this card as a "3" out of a possible "5". There is a lot of specialty cutting with the dies to get the right size openings to fit the sketch, and if you don't have the right size die for cutting the fish scales vellum panel, sizing it digitally may be more than a novice card maker might want to tackle.
